Raby Residence
Another tiny downtown gem – this backyard is small but mighty!
The covered deck, with it’s lounge area complete with warming fire feature to extend the outdoor season, serves as a transition from the house, and a cosy spot to enjoy coffee in the morning. The glass railing keeps the sightlines as open as possible. Then a wide set of stairs down to the main terrace, which is constructed of black Chinese granite, laid on a sand and gravel base. It has a beautiful modern feel to it. The granite is also used for steps to change the grade on the terrace, and to provide an edge to the planting beds. This terrace contains a dining area surrounded by magical and beautiful blooms, ensuring that the space feels very remote from city life.
Privacy is ensured by the position of the custom cedar garden shed at the rear of the property. Its simple and clean lines reinforce the modern design sensibility that is central to the backyard design. A small, still water feature helps to create a tranquil effect. Linear plantings give privacy, soften the hard edges but don’t take up too much space in this small backyard. The plant materials were selected to contribute colour and interest throughout the seasons, as well as spectacular blooms to add interest and make this backyard a showstopper.
Landscape lighting adds an important finishing touch to this property, and makes the site seem larger in the nighttime hours. It is a great place to spend time; day or night.
