City Garden Retreat
These homeowners requested a stylish, ‘edgy’, backyard design and installation for their mid Toronto home.
From the French doors of the house, you step out onto an Ipe wood deck with a tempered glass and stainless steel railing. From the deck you can access the flagstone terrace with it’s dining area, lounge area with fire-table, and an outdoor kitchen. The outdoor kitchen has a built in barbeque and bar, as well as a large food preparation area. This area is flanked by a wooden pergola that provides access to the side yard pathway, as well as privacy from the neighbours.
Another option from the deck is a walkway to a concrete hot tub, backed by a feature stone wall. Adjacent to the hot tub is a sunbathing and lounging area, with a wooden privacy screen and pergola to block the view of the neighboring house. The other side of the stone wall has a water feature that provides another focal point in the backyard, as well as the pleasing sound of the water cascading from multiple copper pipes into the pool. Flagstone set in a grid pattern in grass provides another patio area adjacent to the water feature.
There is a great deal of masonry stonework on this site; all completed with careful attention to detail. Credit Valley ledgerock and Kingston Hue ledgerock were used in combination to closely match the existing stonework of the house. All plant material has been carefully selected to provide color and flowers throughout the seasons and to compliment the hard landscape elements. A vegetable and herb garden is located within the terrace area, next to the deck, in order to be as accessible as possible for cooking.
An existing walkout to the lower level has been touched up with additional planting to match it to the new landscape elements, and pathways on either side have been upgraded to ensure that the entire backyard works together to form a cohesive site. Project complete and homeowners very satisfied with their backyard lifestyle and entertainment area.
