Landscape Ontario: Award of Excellence
This backyard in an estate residential subdivision near Georgetown, has a beautiful forest view of the adjacent conservation lot directly behind them, so privacy was an issue only on the side yards of the residence.

The lounge area has etched, tempered glass privacy screens on two sides and is also edged by large Colorado Spruce, and Diablo Ninebark to create the required feeling of privacy and enclosure. A custom design shade canopy tops a contemporary wooden pergola, with bold modern outdoor lounge furniture and a fire table as the centrepiece. The feature paving in this area is black, Chinese granite.
The dining area is sunken into the grade to add interest and privacy. Additional etched glass panels block the view of the neighbouring property. Again, black Chinese granite is the featured paving. The entrance to the dining area, with it’s central steps and a mortared wall with sandstone coping on either side adds a touch of formality. The large dining table and chairs is protected from the elements by a large moveable umbrella canopy. As well, the chairs tuck right under the table to keep dry.
Simple blocks and mass plantings of shrubs, perennials and ornamental grasses ensure that the contemporary feel of the site is continuous throughout. They have also been selected to provide seasonal colour and bloom in the homeowners selected favorite colours.
The covered porch and the walkways are constructed of wet-laid, square-cut, Owen Sound Erosan flagstone. All elements of this project have been constructed to the highest standards.
All homeowner requirements met; the site looks wonderful and the homeowners immediately started to enjoy their unique and contemporary backyard landscape.
