Weinstein Residence – 2011

Landscape Ontario: Award of Excellence

The newly designed backyard at the Weinstein residence in Thornhill has created a wonderful backyard environment out of a previously sloping, unusable backyard space.  The centrepiece of the backyard is the large swimming pool, which is very popular with the young children of the family.  Plantings around the perimeter of the pool add a great deal of color and texture within a limited area, and also serve to screen from the neighboring properties.  The patio is constructed of hardwearing, pre-cast paving stones in a color mix that complements the house.  Owen Sound flagstone is used as coping on the pool.

The main dining area is off to one end of the pool, at the same level.  Larger pyramidal trees in this area also help with privacy, and help to create ‘walls’ for this garden room.   Up a wide set of Manitoulin stone steps is a landing at the base of the cedar deck.  From this landing you can  access a secluded lounging area, tucked off in a corner of the yard.

Lounge furniture with colourful cushions make you want to put your feet up and relax. To make this area even more useful, a propane heater is located nearby to allow for use during the colder days of spring and fall. Also from the landing is a walkway to the upper grass terrace area and the access to the front yard.

The deck provides access to the house, and is also the barbeque area.  Wide cedar steps help to ensure it is open to the balance of the yard.  Colorful ninebark plantings serve as foundation planting. The retaining wall is created from natural stone, with a simple deciduous hedge planting above it.  This serves to draw the eye along the length of the wall, to the eye-catching dining and lounging areas, or to the pool.

“A place for everything and everything in it’s place.”  Creative design and careful construction has ensured that this motto is appropriate, and serves to highlight the success of this backyard oasis for a young and growing family.
